Manito Ahbee Festival

The Manito Ahbee Festival celebrates Indigenous arts, culture, and music in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The annual festival is held May long weekend each year and features: NextGEN, (education day), Manito Ahbee Pow Wow, Manito Ahbee Marketplace & Food, Spirit Visions 48 hour film challenge (hybrid), Jig N’Jam, cultural performances on our Ignite Our Spirit performance Stage, Manito Ahbee Sports, Indian Horse Relay and more new events/partnerships.

MEANING BEHIND THE NAME

The festival name ‘Manito Ahbee’ was gifted to the festival through ceremony, and is named after the sacred site, which is one of the most important and significant traditional Indigenous gathering sites in all of Turtle Island (North America). The Manito Ahbee sacred site is located in the western Whiteshell area of Manitoba. Manito Ahbee, an Ojibway word means, “where the Creator sits.” The site is recognized and honoured by Indigenous peoples across North America as a sacred place for all people. The name of the province, Manitoba, is itself derived from the name of this sacred site. The festival represents an opportunity for Manitobans and visitors alike to experience the festival as a celebration for all people. Manito Ahbee invites everyone, uniting residents and visitors in the spirit of honouring Indigenous culture and the seven sacred teachings: love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth.

Borealis Beading

Melanie Gamache is a Manitoba Francophone Métis Artist/Artisan. She started beading to help calm her mind, and it has helped her to dig deeper into her Métis culture and heritage, discovering her connection and responsibility with beading and the environment. Each piece she creates is an expression of gratitude to her ancestors, “The Flower Beadwork People”.

Her passion for beading evolved into her business, Borealis Beading. Borealis Beading has a primary goal of sharing Métis culture and history with beadwork, nature, and food. This is achieved by sharing the history of the Flower Beadwork People and Melanie`s personal experiences growing up in a close-knit francophone Métis family. These stories illustrate the connections that the Métis people have with art, socializing and the earth and how they are all woven together like threads in a sash.

Feast Cafe Bistro

Feast is the first of its kind in Manitoba, a full-service cafe and bistro that highlights all the wonderful ingredients our land has to offer. From wild rice and berries, to beans, squash and of course, bison, our menu has no counterpart in the province or in the country.

Some of menu highlights include Manitoba pickerel sliders, butternut squash bannock pizza, traditional bannock tipi tacos, braised bison ribs, fire-roasted buffalo lasagna and our famous dessert bannocks, made in-house daily!

Our goal is to source as many local products as possible. We use Manitoba wild rice, locally-fished pickerel, Bothwell cheese, Saskatoon berries from a local farmer, our bison is farmed locally, and our coffee is from DeLuca’s, our neighbours in the West End, just to name a few.

We aim to keep our dishes full of flavour but accessible to everyone. Whether hosting a formal cocktail event or a young family from the neighbourhood, it is essential that we remain affordable and accessible.

Owner Christa, born and raised in Winnipeg Manitoba, Saulteaux Cree French Metis and a proud member of Peguis First Nation has spent over 25 years refining her cooking and gardening skills and expanding her knowledge of First Nation and Metis Indigenous foods. She is a home cook turned restaurateur whose passion and creativity are woven into the fabric of her restaurant and catering company at Feast Cafe Bistro. Christa is also the Co-Chair of ICAN (Indigenous Culinary Association of Nations) board of directors.

Christa opened Feast with a focus on becoming a pillar in the community. She wants each visitor to experience modern dishes rooted in traditional First Nations and Metis traditional foods while celebrating the spirit of her culture and ancestors. She uses her platform to be a leader in community lead initiatives.

National Indigenous Residential School Museum of Canada

In 1981, 45 acres of land and building became part of Long Plain 6B now called Keeshkeemaquah where the former Portage Indian Residential School was located. In December 2001, through a BCR, a vision was established to have a National Indigenous Residential School Museum. In 2005, the former Portage Indian Residential School was designated as a Provincial heritage site and 2020 became a National Historic Site. An eagle statue and some monuments are the beginning of a memorial and healing garden. In 2019, the Museum was awarded the Governor’s Award “for inspiring ongoing efforts to achieve the vision” of the Museum. In 2023, the Museum received the Indigenous Tourism Award for the Manitoba Region.

Currently, Parks Canada and the NIRSM are working on the unveiling of a National Historic Plaque.

The legacy of the Residential School era is shared through displays, pictures, artifacts, stories and songs. It showcases the Indigenous culture. The Museum is a place where history and culture meet for all nations.

The Museum was created to have “a place where people can learn, share, heal and move forward” and to create a memorial to those who went through the Indian Residential School era. It is also about educating the public, to teach and learn about the indigenous culture, languages, heritage, exposing a painful past through the dark Residential School era to present day 94 Calls to Action and embracing the present and hope for a better future for all. The Museum hosts an annual Orange Shirt Day (Truth and Reconciliation Day).It is a day to learn, share, educate, listen to stories, and celebrate a Day of Reconciliation.

Statistics for visitors to the Museum has grown from 325 to over 1,351 in the last 5 years. The Museum has a website. Partnerships are important to the growth of the Museum. The Museum has supports and partnerships with corporations and organizations. Over the years some of the major partnerships have been with Parks Canada, Travel Manitoba, Indigenous Tourism Manitoba and University of Manitoba.

Our local Long Plain Chief and Council, Arrowhead Development Corporation have been instrumental and major contributors for the operations of the Museum. Other key supports are the Assembly of First Nations, Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, Southern Chief Organization.

The Museum continues to make changes and improvements in their displays and welcome all visitors.

Agowiidiwinan Centre

The Agowiidiwinan Centre, conveniently located at the Forks Market, is a place of learning designed to offer a balanced understanding of the Treaties between the First Nation people and the Crown, including the history of First Nation people, their laws, culture, and customs.

One of the Centre’s key messages is: “We Are All Treaty People,” and the Treaty Relations Commission of Manitoba hopes that the Centre will help Canadians increase their understanding and appreciation of Treaties and our shared responsibilities as Treaty partners.

The Centre showcases informational displays that approach Treaties chronologically from pre-contact to the development of the relations between First Nations and Europeans in contemporary times.

By visiting the Agowiidiwinan Centre, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation of the rich First Nations heritage of Manitoba, and the ongoing process of reconciliation and understanding between First Nations and non-First Nations peoples in Canada. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn and grow.

Our building has space for rent that has great natural light and a wonderful central location at The Forks Market. If you require space for your group, event, or corporate gathering we can help! Pricing ranges from $250 for half day with no resources to $550 for a full day with resources. Let us know what you need, and our staff would be happy to assist.
