New Horizons: Indigenous Guide Certification Program
Module 1: Preparing to Guide
This group session (in-person or online) will cover the information needed to secure a paid or volunteer position with a guiding company, attraction, an outfitter.
Module 2: Complete a 40-hour practicum
The purpose of the field practicum is to:
- Demonstrate the ability to lead guided tours confidently, incorporating effective route planning, clear communication, and guest engagement
- Share authentic stories that resonate with audiences
- Adhere to and respect cultural protocols specific to Indigenous communities, ensuring that all guiding practices are conducted with integrity and authenticity
- Demonstrate the ability to manage group interactions and ensure cohesion
- Recognize and respond to safety concerns and potential hazards and apply proactive measures to prevent incidents
- Manage tour schedules effectively, balancing storytelling, activities, and group transitions to ensure a seamless experience
- During their practicum, participants will have access to up to 2 hours of support from their ITM trainer
- The practicum host will be asked to complete a written participant evaluation and verbally debrief the candidate at the end of their 40 hours and submit to ITM and the participant.
Module 3: Reflection
This final element involves:
- Completing a self-assessment
- Final online written exam
- Meeting with the ITM trainer 1:1 to review the host practicum evaluation and self-reflection
- Participate in a final group session (online or in-community (depending on where people are located
